Lelei TuiSamoa LeLaulu President and CEO, Counterpart International
Lelei LeLaulu is President and Chief Executive Officer of Counterpart
International, a Washington DC based publlic benefit humanitarian and
development organization. Started in Oceania in 1965 as the Foundation for
the Peoples of the South Pacific (FSP). Counterpart now works directly or
with partners in over sixty countries specializing in capacity building,
enterprise development, sustainable tourism, environmental conservation,
food security and distributes up to $100 million worth of humanitarian
assistance every year to needy communities worldwide.
Lelei was a member of the group hand-picked to reform the United Nations in
the 1990s and the Task Force to Re-orient UN Public Information Activities.
Lelei was Chairman of the Committee for the Security and Independence of the
International Civil Service and worked on the release of hostages and
detained people.
In addition to working for the Hudson Institute "think tank" on its
Corporate Environment Program Lelei served as the US Bureau Chief for
International Communications, the London-based company that is the world's
largest English publisher of magazines and periodicals on Africa and the
Middle East.
Lelei, born in Samoa, is a board member of several international
organizations including InterAction, National Cancer Coalition of the US,
East Timor Development and Reconstruction Organization, the Foundation for
the Peoples of the South Pacific (Chairman) and the South-Eastern Europe
Film Festival. He is a founding director of the World Tourism Forum for
Peace and Sustainable Development, and the Caribbean media Exchange on
Sustainable Tourism (CMEx). He is a member of the Global Sustainable Tourism
Alliance, International Tourism Partners, the Leadership Council of the
George Washington University School of Business and an original member of
the Symposium series on Religion, Science and the Environment
